22 Famous Logo Redesigns of 2009 – Will they Sail or Fail?

When you feel that your old company logo is being overlooked among so many contemporary logos, it is an indication that your corporate logo needs to be revamped with a fresh new look. However, thinking of a logo redesign is a risky proposition. Corporate logos take years of hard work and considerable amount of funds to develop. Many companies try to reposition themselves with the redesigning of their corporate logos, either make minimal changes with little impact or extreme changes which can confuse existing customers.

Points to consider for a logo redesign:

Business without a corporate logo is like an entity with no unique identity. Logos deserve particular attention and before a logo is redesigned, one should know why the redesign is needed. Following things should be considered before redesigning corporate logos:

  • Analyze what the existing company logos lack.
  • Remove unnecessary features from the previous logo design.
  • Try to single out a striking feature of the logo to work on.
  • Fill in the gaps left by the previous logo design with creative thoughts.

Over the years, we have witnessed many famous brands who have tried to refresh their corporate identity with a logo redesign. Today, I have selected 22 of the most famous logo redesigns of 2009 that came under immense limelight.

  • Yeah, looks like it’s hugging a different part of the world. I can’t make out which one.

The new firefox logo has changes that have more to do with how the logo is seen in the computer, mostly adresses issues with shadow rendering, how blurry it was at 16 x 16 pixels, the amount of cropping on the doc reflex for mac’s os x and others. thas basically why they look so much alike. For more information you can check Alex Faaborg’s blog on mozilla’s page. they are planing a redesign on the thunder bird icon also ;)

gotta love how blackwater redid their logo, trying to get rid of a bad name, are we?

  • I think my favorite so far has got to be the skittles redesign, and my least favorite is the new master card logo, I don;t know why, but I just don’t like it lol.
Anyway, thanks for sharing the sneak peak at new logos!
Feel free to visit me back :)

  • A lot of them are obvious updating of color, detail, shading and shadowing. The obvious updating with some of them is keeping up with the times, going with a clean, Web 2.0 take on their logo. Some of the designs are too drastic in a bad way. The most dramatic change that looks good I think is the British Petroleum logo.

  • Matt says:

A lot of big ones here. I think I like all of them, though. At the very least I don’t hate them. MasterCard is also my least favourite, though.

  • Allan says:

Euro 2012 and Peugeot are very nice actually, both images were highly refreshed and the color palettes were perfectly transformed from their original essence. Quick time’s would be amazing if it wasn’t for the purple fill :(

  • Kikilala says:

I like it how thy simplified the Toys”r”us logo, just nice and the AOL logo totally rocks, cant imagine how they manage to convince the client to go for that kind of style, same, mastercard is my least fav too, the old one is much better.

  • Youhoo says:

That’s just great. The U. S. Missile Defense Agency now features a not very well concealed Islamic crescent star.

  • Katie says:

Ah, the world is shinier on the new Firefox logo because of global warming =D Very logical.

  • sandy says:

Kraft Foods logo looks like a tampon box.

  • Nikki says:

The difference with the Firefox logos is the shape of the land on the earth that the fox is wrapped around.

  • phil says:

    I’d like to see a major bank do a logo re-design which features a pig..maybe a hog.

  • jim says:

Cadillac, Audi and Peugeot new logos are awesome changes. They look great. The rest I don’t care much about.

  • Anna says:

As a graphic designer I have to say that some of the new logos are really good and they’ll probably enhance their company’s image, but some, are a complete waste of time and money. I liked what they did to British Petroleum, Msn, Kraft Foods and Telecom. They really updated BP and Telecom, and the other two were made lighter and more friendly. Firefox just changed the color a little bit and made the tail of the fox fluffier. That, to me, was unnecessary. And Aol has a logo that’s blurry, agressive-looking and hard to understand at first sight. Well, good luck to all of them anyway…

  • Jerry says:

No amount of redesign will help BPs image.

  • Nytestar says:

Firefox logo fox on the left should be put with the globe on the right. Mastercard Logo was much clearer before, now looks like ‘Big Brother’ is watching? Quicktime should fill with blue same lighting. Skittles looks like a fluid not candy. LOVE most of the other changes. Great job designers!

  • I really like the BP logo revamp! The recent Seattle’s Best Coffee logo is disturbing…such a fail!
