Let us suppose, McDonalds’ decides to radically change its corporate logos. Now imagine travelling on the highway, you are searching for the big “M” to spot a McDonalds’ outlet but you don’t see any. Since the logo design, which you have been so used to, has been changed, you won’t be able to recognize the franchise from far away… would you?

The above assumption is meant to explain the possible impact of changing your company logos. Like every human being, an organization has an identity of its own. A corporate identity includes a name and a representative logo. The name of the company is complemented by its logo as the face of a company. Making alterations or even the slightest of modifications to the company logo can have dual effects on the corporate identity and its brand equity.

Let us have a look at the possible impacts of modifying company logos, both positive and negative.

Positive Impacts of changing your company logo:

A change in company logo revitalizes you business appearance and gives a fresh look.

When an organization gets stuck in a controversy, a change in company logo can help pacify matters.

A modification in your company logo can help accommodate your growing business portfolio.

Alterations in company logo can assist in repositioning of the brand identity in the mind of customers.

Negative Impacts of changing your company logo:

Customers may not recognize the newly changed identity or simply may not like the new company logo.

Too many modifications can spoil your company logo.

Due to stationary items (business cards, letterheads, corporate brochures etc) carrying the previous logo, a redesign incurs great replacement costs.

The customers who are bonded with the existing company logo may not readily adopt the changes.

Any modification in your company identity should be based on an extensive research of the potential repercussions of the redesign. In a nut shell, changes in your business logos should be reasonable and in alignment with your previous corporate identity.

Corporate identity, once prepared, requires promotion to reap fruitful benefits from it. Corporate logos not only depend on the creation process but also rely on the extent of advertising. One of the best tools of advertising your corporate identity is corporate brochure. Corporate brochures, most commonly known as pamphlets or leaflets, serve as informative script of your company’s products and services.
Never ignore the importance of brochures for making your business successful. These corporate leaflets are like salesmen who present your business products and services to the clients. They provide supplementary information to customers regarding your business functions.

Corporate brochure designs are usually printed on a thick gloss paper using four-color process to enhance its quality. It announced on February 13, 2009 that it would be operating under the new name "Xe".

1 ) About the Blackwater Logo Designs – Old and New:

The company’s infamous bear-paw and crosshairs logo design became an icon within the private-security industry, to the extent that some Blackwater guards had it tattooed on themselves. After the September 2007 shooting, the company attempted to soften the look of their company logo and changed its name from Blackwater to Xe Services LLC. The new logo design is a stylish black "X" on a white background, with a small "e" superimposed on it. Many believe that this new logo design is a bizarre cross between the old Xerox corporate logo and the brand mark for Xena: Warrior Princess.

2 ) Why the sudden redesign?

Interestingly, the executive board of Blackwater has indirectly confessed that it had to change Blackwater’s name and corporate logo due to massive criticism it faced. Blackwater’s President Gary Jackson has said that,

The redesigning of the company logo came as five former Blackwater guards faced charges in the shooting deaths of 17 unarmed civilians. A sixth man has already pleaded guilty in the 2007 incident, which resulted in Blackwater losing its license to operate in Iraq.

The former name and company logo “Blackwater” has also been removed from its various business units.

“The new name reflects the change in company focus away from the business of providing private security to providing training."

3 ) Experts’ opinion on the new corporate logo:

Regardless of the motives for rebranding, experts aren’t convinced the new logo design will bolster the company’s image.
Howard Belk, co-president and chief creative officer of brand strategy firm Siegel Gale, referring to the surreptitious, sneaky qualities of the logo design said that,

"Now they look more like a spy organization, when [people] hear it, they won’t know how to spell it. When they see it, they won’t know how to say it.”

So what do you think…the new identity adopted by this notorious company will help repairing its much tarnished image?

We all are always insisted to have a unique company logo or simply a symbol that can help in identifying our business and its services. Have you ever wondered why it is so important to have company logos? After so many years of running a successful small business, I would like to share how I have perceived the importance of a company logo.

The effectiveness of a company logo depends on its identification and frequent reference by the customers. Customers get a brief review of the company, which helps them remember the services offered.

Company Logos and their Benefits

Those interested in developing company logos should make it point to get their logos done by professionals. Not only they are assured that they will get one of the best logos for their company and business, every intricacy related to developing company logos is taken care by these professionals. Unique business and company logos attract a target audience so effectively that it plays a major role in the success of the company.

Every business and company enjoys specific benefits as a result of deploying company logos in their business services. These unique company logos have a number of benefits, some of which are:

Excellent company logos act as a serious and effective boost to the business

A company logo plays a major role in advertising competition and sends the message that the business is here to stay.

In any business, attracting the target audience is really important. An effective company logo succeeds in attracting the attention of target audience and receiving their continued support.

Logos in general represent a brand. Creating brand awareness is an essential part of any business strategy that not only offers them tremendous business opportunity, but also the association with other companies.

How about creating an impression in the field? Company logos play a vital role in creating a first impression in the business field and offering an image that is sure to fetch business opportunities.

Your company is sure to assume a name and character with the company logo designed for it.

Different Kinds of Company Logos

Company logos are of three different kinds: text, symbolic and combination. While text symbols use special calligraphic symbols to represent the name of the company with its full name or initials, symbolic logos use specific symbols to represent the company and its services. Combination logos, on the other hand, consist of a combination of text and symbols representing the company. Out of the three, combination logos are the most expensive.

Certainly, the topic today is not new, but surely very controversial one. Being in this corporate world I would like to discuss the importance of logo design contests in a corporate world. The logo design awareness is on a rise and business owners are now very convinced about having a strong corporate identity. But this also brings in number of choices to get a logo design, leaving us confused in the end.

Crossing the basic debate about advantages and disadvantages of Spec work, I would like to highlight a new aspect. Recession has given birth to abundant small businesses, making them approach different logo design contest sites to get a new corporate identity within a limited budget.

Here I would like to ask a question to all the great names of logo design community and expect an honest answer… Is it wrong to get a logo from a contest site, in these low economy times?

Unquestionably, the success and failure of a business immensely relies on its corporate logos and a professional company logos should be our top priority. However, looking at the present economy crisis, when so many people are being laid off, not left with much choice except to start a small business to earn their bread and butter.

Big names of design community evidently oppose design crowd sourcing and ridiculously curse the spec work. Brand stack, Crowd Spring, Inc Spring, 99Designs, MycroBurst and many other such resources are crudely being blamed for supporting this trend of design contest sites. They believe that designers are paid too low on such sites and mostly their hard work is wasted. I think before tagging the logo design contest sites as immoral and useless, they should consider the present economy breakdown. Every business owner cannot pay big prices of top designers and in such circumstances they are not left with much choice then these contest sites.

After sharing my verdict, I would like to know from you all if the present financial break down is a justifying reason to approach logo design contests and are they really beneficial?

Its human nature to always ask for more ‘n’ more and this notion keeps us on our toes. Similarly, big corporations keep looking for new means of advertising so they don’t miss any chance of winning potential clients. Therefore, many big names of corporate world have jumped onto the bandwagon of corporate blogging, to gain more exposure.

Although, blogging has become prominent part of marketing strategies nowadays but at the same time several corporate companies are unaware of its myths and facts. Today, this post of mine will surely help you know all about corporate blogs…let’s get started.

1) Advantages of Corporate Blogging:

Firstly, let’s analyze how corporate blogging can help a company reach its organizational goals. So, here are the reasons for which corporate blogging has become a success tip:

It helps a company have a strong bond with its customers

A company can communicate with its own employees

Blogging can be used as a promotional tool to reach new target markets

Blog is a platform to have open dialogue between executives, staff, and customers

Blogs builds a strong company image by branding your product in the market

It helps a customer know more about company’s products and services.

It helps you to have an update of your competitors proceedings

Being a direct communication channel, blogs helps you improve your customer service on global basis.

Allows the company employees to display their expertise on a particular topic.

You stay updated about the worldwide conferences/meetings related to your industry.

Lastly, as compare to other communication strategies, blogging is relatively much cheaper.

2) Disadvantages of Corporate Blogging:

Although I don’t think blogging can harm any company in any way but still it is important that we see consider negative and positive aspect of every topic. However, my list of disadvantages is really short, if you have any to add, please do add.

Your competitors can easily exploit any aspect of your company, which can lead to bad publicity.

Many workers have been fired by their bosses for putting such content on the blog which took the company in negative direction.

Many companies have invested big money in customizing their blogs but unfortunately they did not receive expected results.

Blogs revealing multiple tones and opinions of a company can also leave a confusing image of the organization.

A badly worded blog or factually incorrect blogs can spell disaster for the company.

3) Facts about Corporate Blogging:

Undoubtedly, blogs are considered to be traffic magnets and a powerful communication tool but it does not mean that it works for everyone. Yes my friends, surveys have proved that many corporate blogs have failed and only few succeeded. There are few facts you should know be aware of Corporate Blogging:

Many companies overly rate the blogs and expect tons of traffic driving in overnight.

It can take you months to build in long-term and authentic readership.

Blogging is not only about talking about yourself and your organization. Give enough space to your readers and customers to share their views.

When writing a blog post always try to come up with useful content and detailed facts for the readers otherwise you won’t be able to win trustworthy visitors.

Blogs allow users and your competitors to publicly criticize you on your own blog. Be patient and cleverly respond to the negative comments of your readers.

People do not always want to know about your organization and its goals. They will enjoy if you introduce them to the team members of the venture.

According to latest researches/polls 55% of corporations are blogging but I would say that don’t follow this trend only because they are fast, cheap and easy to use. I would suggest, just don’t jump for the blog world as everyone is doing it. Study your target audience, niche market and company goals, irrespective of your company size. The longer you take to recognize its importance, the longer you delay your success.
